Skill acquisition as an adult

Everyone has to start from zero.

We are born as a blank slate and develop skills and understanding through observation, action, failure, and persistence.

It is easier to pick up skills as a kid than as an adult. Adults have less time to dedicate to skilled pursuits and their brains aren’t as “plastic” as they used to be.

I have gone from beginner to competency in 3 main pursuits as an adult. Surfing, guitar, and resistance training.

I started learning these skills after age 20. At age 37, I feel I have reached a level of ability where I am confident in most situations. I believe I could teach any beginner to build a solid foundation in each of these 3 pursuits.

I am a beginner once again. I have never built a brand or following on social media.

How do I plan on going from clueless rookie to seasoned pro?

The same way I approached surfing, guitar and fitness.

1. Master the fundamentals. Identify the basic core competencies and practice them until they become second nature. GO SLOW. Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast.

2. Show up daily. Hit the gym. Paddle out. Strum a chord. Every. Damn. Day. Build the habit of showing up and allow the learning to compound. Consistency is key.

3. Adopt a beginners mindset. Observe yourself with ZERO judgement. Break down what you are doing and identify areas where you can make minor improvements.

Buzzing chords? Adjust your fingers.

Paddled for and missed a wave? Check your environmental markers and reposition.

Feeling a bicep curl in your neck? Check your ego, grab a lighter weight, and lift slowly with intent (mind muscle connection).

4. People that are better than you are your TEACHERS…not COMPETITION. Observe those around you that move with grace. Mirror their behavior. Be curious. Ask them how they did that move or how they honed their approach.

I plan to incorporate all of these tips to grow my audience on social. Not so I can be famous. So I can be of service to my fellow knowledge seekers and extend my helping hand to those a few steps behind me on this journey called life.
