I have a love/hate relationship with the barbell.
The muscle stimulus you can achieve with the implement is hard to beat.
But the tool itself is awkward. Forcing the dynamic human frame to move more like a Lego action figure.
Movement should be fluid. Amorphous. Exotic. Adaptive.
Barbells tend to drive users toward rigidity and stiffness.
@functionalpatterns taught me that my training should respect the SAID principle. Specific Adaptations to Imposed Demands. If all of my training revolves around robotic barbell hip hinge dominate movements like deadlifts and heavy back squats, I shouldn’t be surprised if my athletic rotational fluidity suffers.
My training continues to evolve.
Less terminator.
More Bruce Lee.
I have my first child on the way. Due in November. I want to be the superhero that I saw when I looked at my own dad.
To swing an axe.
To pull the string & fire an arrow.
To carry my wife and kid on my shoulders.
And to crawl around through a fort we built in the living room.
These goals orient my training.
Where is your training leading you?
